Indigenous News
Without Borders
From documentary archive to global audience.
Indigenous News Without Borders is a proposed independent video journalism venture developed by Mattias Persson Suorra through Rörliga rötter. Its ambition is to connect Indigenous stories with international audiences, starting with Sápmi.
The first experiment
The proposed pilot would use existing material from The Weight of a People, a documentary currently being completed, to create two short, standalone video stories around one theme. Current research would be added where needed, with explanations tailored to viewers unfamiliar with Sápmi.
Where AI could help
The experiment would test AI assistance with transcript searches, identifying relevant material, exploring narrative structure and preparing English subtitles and background explanations. Editorial decisions, verification and responsibility would remain with the filmmaker. Sensitive material would be handled only in appropriate tools and within the relevant permissions.
What the pilot would assess
- Journalistic quality: accuracy, meaning, cultural context and the integrity of participants’ voices.
- Practical value: production time, review and correction work, and tool costs.
- Audience understanding: feedback from Sámi and international viewers.
- Business potential: commissioning or licensing interest from possible publishing partners.
The intended outcome is two pilot videos, a documented workflow and an initial business proposition grounded in the results. This project is at the development stage; the pilot videos have not yet been produced.
